Obesity affects the lungs

Pulmonary embolism (PTE) deaths are on the increase and could be linked to obesity, says a letter to the editor of the latest medical journal of Australia.

Professor of Pathology at the University of Adelaide Roger Byard and his co-author declared that, while the focus is often on the complications of obesity, such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, it is also a link to Pte.

Prof Byard and co-author analyzed and recorded the number of deaths of the sudden subject to forensic autopsy in Australia of the South from 2000 to 2009, when the cause of death was Pte.

Despite considerable annual fluctuations, the PTE mortality rate showed a small increase at the time, said Prof Byard, increase of 3.59% of autopsies in 2000-2004 at 3.71% in 2005-2009.

In 2008, the index of average weight (BMI) of persons die of PTE (29.6 kg/m2) was significantly higher than in a control group of individuals who died of other causes (25.9 kg/m2).

"If the soldier is permanently associated with BMI, it can have significant effects on the diagnosis of the hospital, units of forensic investigations of forensic and public spending in the future,", said Professor Byard.
